What a joy it is to see one’s home town as a satellite image. I am sure every blogger worth his salt knows about the Google Earth. Initially it was cool to see Bay Area and see all the locations etc. It also helped me in finding my next apartment. One can see the neighbor hood etc using this. Then Ashish wrote in an email that he was able to get the long/lats for his home in Delhi using it. That got me interested that Ambala not as large as Delhi still be visible. And here is the shot of Ambala. I can find out GT Road, Ambala Chandigarh Highway, Indian Air Force Station and the air strips inside it etc.

My immediate reaction was to kind of draw on top of this image with the names of different roads etc. Too bad that functionality is only available in Google Earth Plus. This functionality would allow easy creation of online maps. I had discussed this with Vishal some time back. It would very cool to have “detailed” street lever online maps of India. May be this will become reality in near future.

2Well, there was keyhole before Google Earth. Sure, you needed a new email address to activate your account for 10-15 days every time, but in a world full of hotmail, gmail and yahoo - there is an infinite supply of email accounts, so although inconvenient, it was possible.
My point is not to say that Google Earth is not the best thing to have happened to mankind (arre humankind bola karo bhai), but that we had options before too.
And yes, I am a big fan of Google.

3Do you know about http://www.mapmyindia.com? Its like MSN/Yahoo/Google maps, but for India. Of course, its neither functionally equipped like these nor covers whole of India, but still something for India atleast…

4Hi Ashish and Pankaj,
Thank you for mentioning MapmyIndia. MapmyIndia is only a year old, but we have been working on increasing the content and technology every day. Now, on MapmyIndia you can see highly detailed maps of India, street-level maps of more than 150 cities in India, and get route maps and driving directions for India.
Also, MapmyIndia has introduced an innovative concept specifically for India. It is called ‘eLocation’.
eLocation makes it really easy for someone to see the map and directions to your place. And it’s India’s own way of providing detailed directions to one’s house, despite the fact that lanes have no names and roads aren’t well organized.
In fact, without me writing a long explanation, why don’t you simply go to the MapmyIndia site (http://www.mapmyindia.com) and search for a sample eLocation. The id is: arunhome
Check out the details below the map. You will see the power of eLocation there. I would love to hear your feedback (email address: rohanv@stanford.edu) and of course, you can get eLocated too. It’s free!
Thanks and hope to hear your comments on the blog or in a mai,
Rohan (on behalf of the MapmyIndia team)

If you want to see your house on a map (the street actually), visit MapmyIndia
(http://www.mapmyindia.com)
This is an Indian company’s initiative at creating an internet map site that will come up and
do as much as Google and Mapquest has done. We’re also adding an Indian twist to the things we
do. Check out this concept called ‘eLocation’ MapmyIndia has introduced.
eLocation allows you to get maps and directions to a peron’s place, and the cool thing is that
it gives you the directions in the words of that person (take a left after you see a panwallah,
go inside that gate…u know, how people explani directions in India).
Search for this sample elocation and you’ll see what I mean. The id is: mapmyindia
Looking forward to your comments on the blog or through mail (my email address is:

Thanks and hope you can enjoy India in much much more detail =)
